About LiteRamp ™ |
Our HistoryIn the summer of 2003, several engineers from a large medical device company in New Jersey started to work on a portable wheelchair ramp project. Our goal was to come up with a better design than the tri-fold wheelchair ramp. Although the tri-fold wheelchair ramps can fold into quarters to reduce size, they don't reduce lifting weight. Most people don't know what it feels like to carry 40-50 pounds of weight in hand. We know - it's called weight-lifting. So our idea was simple: make the ramp detachable into two pieces and make both pieces foldable. We named it LiteRamp, because it's light to carry. LiteRamp received great acceptance by both consumers and dealers. In 2004, we had to expand to meet the demands. We decided to move the company to Florence, South Carolina, where we remain today. Our ProductsOur wheelchair ramps and scooter ramps are useful and practical products because they make people's lives easier. With our products, people in wheelchairs can extend their mobility. Our products are designed from the ground up to be light to carry, easy to use, and safe to transport. Our ProcessThe aluminum panels used on our wheelchair ramps are made through a process known as extrusion. During extrusion, round aluminum stock is heated to a temperature where it becomes something like tooth paste. The paste is then "squeezed" hydraulically through metal dies to form continuous shapes. The shapes are cooled down, cut to length, then heat treated to develop high strength. They are also anodized to be corrosion resistant. Finally, aluminum shapes are machined and assembled into platforms. Our StandardsFrom the aluminum panels down to every fastener, we pay great attention in building our ramps. A wheelchair ramp or scooter ramp is a safety related product and deserves extra attention. Our ramps, as people would notice, have a milky white finish, which is quite different from our competitor's products. The finish reflects the heavy oxide layer produced in the anodizing process. It costs more to produce but makes the product more corrosion resistant. Our ValueRamps for wheelchair use are not covered by Medicare nor Medicaid. They must be affordable. Today's ramp manufacturers face a dilemma: until costs go down, ramps will remain as high-priced niche products; but until ramps become more affordable and sell more, costs will remain high. LiteRamp ™ is committed to make wheelchair ramps and scooter ramps affordable by cutting prices first. After all, extending people's mobility is not only our work, but also our passion. We hope you join us in helping others. |
